Kate Moss: Fashion Icon

Hey everyone.

Girl Overload here.

Kate Moss. Supermodel, legend, and she definitely isn’t backing down anytime soon.

Kate Moss has been in demand for many years coming, especially by coveted designer brands. She has also jet-setted all over the world for countless fashion shoots and catwalk shows.

But her favourite clothes to wear? Not fresh off the rack clothing, not even garments from fashion shows that haven’t even been released yet.

Vintage clothing. Kate Moss loves vintage clothing more than a dog loves its bone. You’re probably thinking, what about the lemon-yellow dress she wore to a New York fashion week dinner in 2003, which she later decided to recreate in her Topshop collection? The answer is a vintage frock by 1950s French couturier Jean Dessès. Or the black cocktail dress with feathered off-the-shoulder hemline she donned on the red carpet at Cannes in 1998? A vintage shantung silk piece, given a classic, off-beat 90s twist with scraped back hair and simple black strappy slingback sandals. Or, what about at the Glastonbury festival in 2005, what did she wear with cut-off denim shorts and Hunter boots? The answer is a 1970s Roncelli leather jacket.

Most of her coveted pieces she has won have either been vintage or second hand. As quoted by the Guardian, secondhand to her has never been second best.

When she wants to look special, she goes vintage.

The Guardian

Kate Moss has also recently edited a book in collaboration with the Chilean fashion Museum titled Musings on Fashion and Style: Museo de la Moda, which talks about Kate’s Fashion Wisdom and other useful tidbits of advice.

Some advice that she has is look at a specific garment, not a brand or label. This way you have more insight into what you are wearing instead of just the fact that it says Chanel on the price tag.

Another tip that she has is look at what cuts and colours best suit you and choose clothing from there.

When a woman smiles, her dress should smile with her

Madeline Vionnet, 1930’s Paris Icon

A final shocking tip she has is “Head to the charity shops, you can still find brilliant pieces there if you are prepared to hunt around.”

Kate Moss, A lister, at charity shops? What a shocker! But for the sake of being diplomatic, I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt and believe her.

She has even quoted to shopping at Oxfam and Portobello markets.

Yes, I love the idea that the clothes have a history and have been worn previously. Who knows what they have experienced? Also, it’s good that clothes are recycled and worn again rather than being thrown out.

Little Mix: A New Talent Show

Hey Everyone.

Girl Overload here.

Little Mix. The most popular current western girl band in the entire world.

Many fans of the hit girl group, otherwise known as Mixers, have built up a dedicated fan base all over the globe.

Mixers also know that Little Mix also won the UK X-Factor in 2011 and were the first girl group to do so.

But something that has recently surfaced is that Little Mix has created their own talent show titled “Little Mix: The Search.”

Many people online initially thought that this was a rumor and there’s no possible explanation for this occurrence, especially since that this would rival shows such as American Idol, Got Talent Global (America’s Got Talent, Britain’s Got Talent, e.t.c), and their own former show that they were contestants on, the UK X-Factor.

Another specific reason that people were shocked is because Simon Cowell, who was their former manager, and the CEO of their specific former record label, SYCO and Epic Records, is the head creator of the X-Factor and Got Talent franchise. Little Mix and Simon Cowell both got into a scandal as it was revealed that Simon Cowell’s brand SYCO management and Epic Records, have mistreated Little Mix while they were still represented from those specific brands. Little Mix has since left both of those establishments.

Little Mix has confirmed that the upcoming talent show “Little Mix: The Search” is in fact real on their social media pages. The show will air on the BBC every Saturday.

Top Everlasting Statements That Will Never Go Out Of Style

Hey everyone.

Girl Overload here.

Fashion Statements.

A good fashion statement is like silver, people may look at you weirdly because you are wearing it instead of “gold” (fast fashion), but silver is timeless, never rusts or goes out of fashion, and truly is remarkable.

Here’s a few fashion statements so that you can learn how to stand out from the crowd and be that one diamond in the rough.

Bold Trademark Details

Whether it’s a classic headband or a bold, funky necklace, finding a statement, trademark accessory is a definite must.

Classic Patterns

Lots of patterns are considered timeless, such as bows, stripes, polka dots, and florals are considered stylish and everlasting. Research on websites and pick wisely. Think to yourself, were people wearing this 50, 60 years ago? What were classic celebrities wearing? Would I genuinely wear this? If it doesn’t fit any of that criteria, don’t wear it.

Key Accessories

In my honest opinion, every woman should own at least one black pair of heels and one black bag in her lifetime. It doesn’t have be designer, but think for yourself, would I wear this in 10 years time? If not, don’t buy it.

Think Ahead

Image result for carrie bradshaw then and now

You’ve probably already heard of the notorious quote, dress for the job you want, not for the job that you have. As much as as I mostly agree with that quote, I thought to switch it up a little. Dress for the life you want, not for the life that you have. That way you are ahead of the game in the best way possible. Don’t just dream it, do it.

Dress for the life that you want, not for the life that you have.

Girl Overload

And overall, be the silver not the gold. The silver may not be as acclaimed as the gold, as accomplished as the gold, as sought after as the gold, but just remember, the silver doesn’t rust. And if it does a little, it can easily be repaired. Gold does rust and wear out however, no matter how acclaimed it may be, just like fast fashion. Silver is timeless, just like trademark, timeless fashion.

That’s a lesson for everyone.

Don’t forget it.

Paris Fashion Week: Catwalk Catastrophe

Hey everyone.

Girl Overload here.

Spotted: A Paris fashion YouTuber sabotaging a catwalk or just some comedic fun?

The popular and famous, or should I say infamous, YouTuber titled Marie S’Infiltre was seen crashing a Paris catwalk. And not just any catwalk, but a coveted Chanel catwalk.

Everyone from Anna Wintour to Cardi B to hit singer Jennie from Blackpink was seen attending this show, so needless to say, she had quite a big audience.

And that’s not all.

Highly in-demand supermodel Gigi Hadid stopped the infamous catwalk crasher from walking further on into the show and on the main stage when security refused to stop Infiltre.

After receiving numerous amounts of backlash, Marie reportedly said that “it was just supposed to be a bit of comedic fun and that’s what my channel is all about.”

However, angry people on social media and people who attended the show disagreed with Infiltre’s statement heavily.

Well, as they always say, all publicity is good publicity.

What are your thoughts on this situation?

Supermodel for a day or outright disaster?

Tell me in the comments.

Spotted: Forever 21 Goes Bankrupt?

Image result for forever 21

Hey Everyone.

Girl Overload here.

Spotted: Forever 21. A successful company.

Or is it?

Forever 21 is a popular teen brand notorious for it’s fast fashion and enticing teens all over the globe.

Image result for teens shopping

But recently the trendy clothing company has been part of an, er, scandal by reportedly ripping off Ariana’s smash-hit 7 Rings music video with their recent clothing line.

Ariana has apparently sued the brand for $10 million.

But that’s not all.

Forever 21 has also ripped off many annoyingly catchy slogans from smaller brands, such as Word with their “Woman written in different languages” graphic tee.

Another brand titled Wildfang also claimed that F21 ripped off their “wild feminist” trademark slogan.

Many teens and young adults who used to love shopping at Forever 21 now refuse to shop there because of their excessive use of sweatshops and unethical practices, such as their dramatic negative impact to climate change.

These past fans of the store also don’t want to shop there because of their cheap materials and overbearing t-shirt captions.

Overall this change means that more brands such as Zara, H & M, and Topshop will now rise to the surface.

How To Amp Up Your Style: The Know-How Guide

Image result for style amp up

Hey everyone.

Girl Overload here.

Back it again with some style know-how.

Have you ever seen a fashion spread and thought, oh, I have a similar outfit to this but they do it so much better? Or at the very least something similar?

Well, here’s how.

Image result for woman wearing a belt

Step One: Belt it. Do you have a baggy outfit? Belt it. Do you have an ill-fitting outfit in the waist-area? Belt it. If you think about it critically, most fashion photo-shoots have a belt worn at least once. So, wear a belt so that people will be enchanted to your natural allure.

Image result for celebrities wearing sunglasses

Step Two: Pick up a pair of sunglasses. Ever wondered how celebrities look so glam at a moments notice? The simple answer: Sunglasses. So pick up a pair from a local department store that suits your face shape and you’ll be looking like a celebrity in no time.

Image result for glam celebrities

Step Three: Find a style that works for you. To really amp up your style game, research different styles and find a particular one that works for you. Is it preppy and elegant, is it summery and boho, or is it more edgy and rock and roll? Find your style and really start to hone that in.

Image result for colourful outfits

Step Four: Learn how to incorporate pops of colour once in a while to really stand out from the crowd. If you are really nervous and don’t like to wear lots of colours at once, start out like this lady just above this step. She is still wearing leggings, boots, and a black tee, but she is adding a bright blue jacket to her outfit to really make it pop and to add it that little jen ne sais quoi.

Image result for colourful outfits

Step Five: Have a smile on your face. Take a look at this image. What really stands out about her? The bright colours? Not necessarily. The subtle pop of red lipstick? Not quite. The electric, glowing, smile on her face. A simple smile can instantly make a person more attractive and give them a glowing magnetism.

Nothing beats a great smile

This Week’s Fashion Rundown: Modern Royal Flamboyance

Eighth Edition

Hey everyone.

Girl Overload here.

And boy, have I got a treat for you.

This week, because, I, Girl Overload, is bursting with ideas, you are getting two rundowns.

Last rundown I tried something new and wrote about Highbrow V.S. Lowbrow, this rundown I am going back to the fashion format to specifically write about Royal Couture.

Here’s a few quick steps if you really want to nail that look.

Image result for amelia windsor

Step One: Instead of wearing glitterific tiaras, opt for a slightly more subtle headband instead. Learn from the best.

Related image

Headbands are still elegant and tres chic yet still being able to not look like a five year old playing dress up.

There are many different headband options in stores and online, so be sure to have a clear lookout.

Step Two: When in doubt, casualize an outfit. Casualizing means to take a formal/semi-formal outfit from online or in catalogue and to put a casual twist on it.

Image result for classy pink top florals

Here is a key example of casualizing. You’re taking a floral dress, but actually purchasing a floral top paired with some classy white jeans.

Casualizing is a great way to give royal couture a modern twist.

Step Three: Learn how to style outwear. Most, if not all of the female British royals have outerwear if one of their trademarks.

Purchase a black trench coat and mark your way from there.

Step Four: When in doubt, take inspiration from your favourite royale films. The Princess Diaries is a prime example.

Put all these together plus a couple of your own if you want, and there you have it, Modern Royal! Your own special look, so if you do realise that you are an heir to a foreign royal throne, these tips will be here to help get you started.

Don’t make me say I told you so.

Fashion Defined: What The Dictionary Doesn’t Tell You About Fashion

Hey everyone,

Girl Overload here.

Fashion. The definitive Google definition for this word is “a popular or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behaviour.”

The Oxford definition for “fashionable” is “characteristic of, influenced by, or representing a current popular style” or “(of a person) dressing or behaving according to the current trend.”

The examples for these definitions are even worse. At least the definitions somewhat describe what being fashionable is all about.

One of the key, yet wrong examples is…

“They risked being scoffed at by their more fashionable friends

Oxford Dictionary
Image result for teenager sad

And the point is, why?

Why do people dress fashionable just to gain attention from others or even just fit in?

Why can’t people wear what they want to wear without fear of judgement or trying to be “cool?”

Related image

Fashion to me is not trying to fit in, impress others, or follow trends that aren’t even particularly long lasting.

Fashion is expressing yourself, wearing what you genuinely want to without being scared of others opinions,

“Fashion is movement, design, architecture, all in one. It shows the world who we are and who we want to be” as a wise owl once said.

“Fashion is movement, design, architecture, all in one. It shows the world who we are and who we want to be”

Gossip Girl

And one night in bed, I thought of a theory that I called the Echo Effect. The Echo Effect can apply to many things, but mostly fashion and trends.

This effect means that in theory, when a person yells, the echo sound appears and gets louder, and the echo sound repeats.

This relates to the Echo Effect. The person originally yelling is the original trend. The echo appearing and getting louder is the popularity and adoration of the “echo,” or trend in this case. And the echo sound repeating are people slavishly following the trend.

However, why don’t we flip the Echo Effect on it’s heels, or in this case, mouth, and make out own trends. Yes, that’s right, wear what we, as individuals what to wear, and don’t follow anyone or anything else?

That way, when all or most people wear what they want, there will be no room to judge, will there?

And besides, what’s the worst that they can say?

Yes, exactly.

Because, to me, that’s what Fashion is.

Not slavishly following trends, but creating your own trends and unique style and being happy and comfortable in what you wear.

The Echo Effect. Wear what you want to wear. I’ll start it off.

Highbrow V.S. Lowbrow: This Weeks Rundown

Seventh Edition

Hey everyone.

Girl Overload here.

Highbrow vs Lowbrow.

You’ve probably seen these charts everywhere, from magazines such as The New York and Cosmopolitan.

Image result for highbrow vs lowbrow magazine

Here’s an exclusive list of what I consider Highbrow v.s. Lowbrow, that you won’t find anywhere else.

Let’s start with Lowbrow, shall we?

Lowbrow

Fit teas, extreme clothing brands, and practically every brand that screams, YOU NEED TO BE THIN.

Absolutely not.

So Brandy Melville, where all their clothes is size 0 (size 4 in UK/AU clothing) and all their models are thin, attractive, and white?

Sorry, you’re lowbrow. Also the fact that you claim size 0 is the so-called “idealistic” size that all teen girls should be aiming for?

Disgusting. Enough said.

Another lowbrow thing?

And not necessarily the show itself.

As much as this show produces bad body image to young women, the main issue here isn’t even the actual show nor the contestants.

It’s the show’s official face and frontrunner, Tyra Banks.

Official actress and activist Yaya De Costa has spoken about Banks mistreating her while she was on ANTM. According to De Costa, Banks was a colourist who said rude comments about her dark skin. More is yet to be uncovered.

Former ANTM contestant Tiffany Richardson also claimed that Banks yelled at her when she was eliminated for her alleged “bad attitude.”

Wondering why Banks was only on America’s Got Talent for only one season only? According to Variety, Banks pulled an underage girl’s hair and said that her birth was a “mistake.”

AGT then sued Banks because of this misconduct.

Further information is yet to be known on this topic.

Anyway, let’s move on to Highbrow, shall we?

Highbrow

Image result for greta thunberg

With her recent sassy speech at the United Nations (sassy in the best way possible, obviously) Greta Thunberg is currently making waves in the environmental and political community.

“You have stolen my dreams, my childhood, with your empty words,” Thunberg poetically says at the United Nations Climate Change Action Summit.

“We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about are your fairy tales of money and eternal economic growth.”

Greta Thunberg

Thunberg sure knows what she’s talking about. With mass fires in California and the Amazon Rainforest, rubbish in the ocean, and people continuously using non-sustainable gases, Greta Thunberg will not stop sharing her voice at important events until people finally open their eyes.

With Thunberg’s huge current influence at the moment, we sure can’t wait to hear more from her.

And finally, here’s a final highbrow idea to catch your fancy:

Image result for emmys

If you couldn’t catch the sign behind these formidable actors, this is the 2019 Emmy’s.

This coveted event managed to attract all sorts of stars from Jimmy Kimmel to the entire Game of Thrones cast to sisters Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner.

Game of Thrones takes home “best drama,” as they should with all their reputable success.

Image result for game of thrones emmys

Saturday Night Live wins “outstanding variety sketch series” and Late Night with John Oliver wins “outstanding variety talk series.”

RuPaul’s Drag Race also wins “outstanding reality competition series.”

Overall “Fleabag” and “Game of Thrones,” both popular television shows, win the biggest on the night of the 2019 Emmy Awards.

The night of the Emmys definitely had it’s highs (many awards and smiling faces) and lows (two Kardashian sisters being laughed at at this year’s Emmy’s- good publicity or bad publicity?) but overall the biggest highbrow occurance of this week definitely goes to the Emmy’s.

That’s all for now.
