Here are some fashion facts revealed that you don’t see everyday.

Such as the fact that Coco Chanel was an orphan for an amount of time.

Coco Chanel, initially known as Gabrielle Chanel was abandoned by her father at an orphanage at the tender age of 12. Her mother had died a few weeks prior.

She decided to sing at local bars and cafes to gain income when she was an adult. The men there decided to call her Coco, because while she wasn’t a great singer, she had addicting charisma like chocolate.

Because she learned sewing at the orphanage, she decided to sew herself a little black dress all on her own. The local women became fascinated by the dress and many requested their own.

And as they say, the rest is history.

Audrey Hepburn. When you hear these two words, you probably initially think of the glamourous film star, who is tres chic.

However she wasn’t always this way.

Forced to hide her Jewish identity and British roots (she grew up in Holland) during the drastic and horrific World War II, when Audrey’s mother temporarily changed her name from Audrey to Edda and much more, she grew up terrified. From the age of about fourteen to sixteen, she has no other choice but to eat bugs and grass for dinner and all her other meals or else she wouldn’t survive.

When the war ended, her family decided to move back to England. Once she was legally an adult, she decided to make the big move from suburban England to big city New York, where she gained roles in Broadway productions.

She gained roles in minor films before eventually deciding to audition for a film titled Roman Holiday. The director said “She had everything I was looking for and she was absolutely enchanting.”

His major comment that he practically yelled so everyone could hear though? “She’ll be a big star!”

Well, he wasn’t wrong, was he?

And yet again, the rest is history.

Hey everyone, Girl Overload here.

And boy, have I got some exciting news for you.

Have your ever wondered how constant celebrities and TV show characters step out looking flawless at just a single moment’s notice?

Well, never fear, dears.

Because I have got the answer for you.

Ultimate Prep.

Preppy style is personally one of my favourite styles is one of the key styles in countless tv shows such as Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl.

This certain fashion has also been featured in many teen films such as Mean Girls, Clueless, and The Clique.

But enough of me babbling; here’s how to get the coveted look.

Step One: Watch teen tv shows and films. And by watch them, I mean, watch them. Watch Gossip Girl, The Devil Wears Prada, Mean Girls, The Clique, Clueless, Jane By Design, pretty much any work of media you can find that has preppy style as the main focal point.

Step Two: Back to Basics. Basics not meaning a basic white tee. Instead, purchase white blouses, plaid skirts, ballet flats, belts, anything that really screams prep. Don’t be afraid to follow coveted prepsters as well on Instagram and other platforms, they may strike up a couple ideas for you.

Also, no prep girl is a true prep girl without at least one plaid skirt. It’s a common fact.

Step Three: Shop til you drop! Shop as as many top boutiques as you can to really nail that prep look. Go to places such as J.Crew, Kate Spade, Ralph Lauren and Alice+Olivia to get compelling inspiration and maybe even purchase a few key pieces here and there.

Step Four: Learn from the best. That meaning, don’t go too overboard with things. Don’t mix patterns, don’t with plaid on plaid with plaid, don’t wear shimmers everywhere, etcetera. The preppy style is generally known to be somewhat minimalistic, so stick with it!

Step Five: This somewhat goes hand in hand with the last step, but don’t go overboard with makeup! Aside from the occasional dramatic red lip, keep it natural! Try to stay away from thick dark eyeliner, overlined lips, or lots of blush and/or highlighter. Yet again, learn from the best!

Step Six: Shoes and Accessories. Some popular preppy shoes and accessories include ballet flats, Mary Janes, pumps, and kitten heels. Try to avoid sneakers though; on the other hand, avoid stilettos.

Step Six: TV Hair. Do you always wonder how people in TV constantly have perfect hair. The secret key is: wavy hair. Well, that and a hair stylist. The point is, go a a hairdresser and ask them what hairstyle they think would work for you. Trust me, you will be amazed.

Step Seven: Decide what type of prep girl look you really want to channel. Do you want to dress casual prep like Spencer Hastings, city prep like Blair Waldorf, cliche prep like The Heathers, boho prep like Serena Van Der Woodsen, glam prep like Sharpay Evans, or modern prep like Regina George/Cheryl Blossom/Veronica Lodge?

Decide your prep niche and really stick with it.

Step Eight: Do you want to know the final step to being to ultimate preppy girl? One step that so many people overlook but is right under their nose?

Confidence. There. I said it. Walk with your head held high, feet facing forwards, and a smile and a headband to top it all off.

As said by the great Coco Chanel, keep your head, heels, and standards high.

Countless activists claiming to be apart of the “Extinction Rebellion Group” are currently targeting LFW in an almost brutal way.

Their definitive cause for this outburst?

Fast fashion, climate change, and mass marketing/production.

Leaping to dramatic conclusions, Extinction Rebellion also staged in ‘die-in’, throwing numerous buckets of fake blood outside the London venue, apparently symbolizing how fast fashion, mass marketing and production, and constant other principles are causing the world to go extinct and is therefore causing climate change and deforestation.

Extinction Rebellion is saying how the fashion industry needs to be “cancelled” because of what LFW are doing and are even staging more over the top protests throughout the entire fashion week.

Some of their other protests have included blocking the traffic from the busy London Streets for two entire days (called ‘swarming’), and another upcoming protest with is apparently titled “funeral procession for fashion.”

A prominent Extinction Rebellion activist Sara Arnold claims “what is happening in fashion so far is not in proportion to the crisis that we are in. We have actually had warm and productive conversations with the British Fashion Council.”

“But at the moment the industry thinks sustainability can help fashion survive. This is not about the survival of fashion, it’s about the survival of the planet.”

Sustainability has been a major topic up for debate recently in the fashion industry, with even seasoned professionals such as Stella Mccartney and Anna Wintour speaking up about it.

Even the British Fashion Council claim that they hear the message “loud and clear.” and want to do something about it.

New York. Concrete jungle where dreams are of.

Or at least that’s what they say.

New York Glam. The fashion, the busy streets, the bright lights, can you truly get enough?

Only the best and worst people let New York truly get to their heads.

Will you be one of them?

Here’s how to really nail that New York look so that you don’t look like a deer in the headlights.

Step One: Don’t look confused. Most New Yorkers know how to spot a tourist from a mile away, so don’t carry a big map and don’t wear a cliche “I love NY” basic tee. Instead, use a GPS on your phone for instant blending. Blending into the New York crowd, that is.

Step Two: Show, don’t tell. Or in this specific case, look, don’t ask. Don’t ask for fashion advice, I mean. Instead, look around. Look at what fashionable New York elite are wearing on the streets or even online. That’s way better advice in my opinion.

Step Three: Preppy style in all the rage right now, especially in the Upper East and West Side. Gather a few preppy pieces that you like to really nail it and stun the crowd.

Step Four: Four Words. New York Fashion Week. With New York Fashion Week currently in the midst of Manhattan, everyone seems to want a coveted spot at this esteemed event. NYFW is the best place to brush up on your fashion knowledge whether it’s actually attending the shows or just watching it from your television.

Step Five: Research top New York shops. Some are Henri Bendel (the actual shop is closed but there are still listings on eBay), Bergdorf Goodman, Betsey Johnson, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Barneys. Researching top New York shops will help you gain inspiration and guidance to being a true chic New Yorker.

Finally, put all these steps together, add your own special twist on it, and there you have it, your very own coveted New York glam look.

Kaia Gerber, currently age 18. You may or may not know her, but you will definitely know her superfamous mother Cindy Crawford.

Kaia Gerber has been modelling since the ripe age of 10 and is now on her way to being a star studded supermodel.

Kaia also claims that she “lives the life of a 70 year old woman” due to her extremely hectic work schedule.

She was also featured on the October cover of British Vogue, especially to mark her renowned 18th birthday.

She also considers herself a homebody and an old soul, quoting ”I have backgammon at my house, and that’s all a girl needs. When I’m home, I’m living the life of a 70 year old woman… I’m an old soul.” 

Kaia is also very close to her mum, with multiple photos of them out and about.

Kaia also found that modelling wasn’t too difficult, claiming that she was a shy bookworm. However, while she found her peers intimidating, she found it almost natural to be in front of numerous casting agents.

At just age 18 Kaia is definitely one of the world biggest and sought after models, and it doesn’t seem like things will slow down any soon.

Kaia has been part of photoshoots for Chanel and Versace and signed on to her first modelling agency at simply age 13.

Fourth Edition

Spring has sprung, everybody, and you know what that means.

Spring Fashion awaits.

Here are some key pieces every girl needs in their closet to truly nail that spring chic.

• Ballet Flats. Especially black ballet flats. Ballet flats manage to mix cute and chic for the perfect spring look.

• Preppy outfits. Preppy style seems to be all the rage right now, especially in spring.

• Florals. This one is fairly obvious. Florals are the epitome of spring, especially with cherry blossoms and sunflowers and other beautiful flowers blooming. Wear a floral dress to really nail that spring jen ne sais quoi.

• Layer, layer, layer! Spring is the perfect time for layering without going extremely overboard just like in the winter time. Pair jeans with a chic scarf, for instance.

• Wearing bright colours in spring is another vital tool to really get that spring look down. Spring is a bright fun, time, with flowers blooming and the sun finally starting to shine.

• And finally, cute accessories. After all, an outfit isn’t truly complete without extras, is it?

Sunglasses, earrings, headbands, and a bright pop of lipstick is all you need for spring.

Don’t go too overboard though. Remember, less is more.

New York Fashion Week. The shoes, glamour, and luxury.

Don’t you just love it?

Here are some current NY fashion week news you don’t see everyday.

Such as Camila Cabello. With her smash hit songs Senorita and Havana, no wonder she is a global sensation.

Rumour has it she will be performing at New York Fashion Week this Friday.

According to special insiders, Camila will be performing her new single off her new untitled album, that fans are currently calling CC2 (Camila Cabello Album 2).

And that’s not all. Rodarte are currently off the New York scene for unexplained reasons and Tommy HIlfiger are currently back in action and more on the scene than ever.

Current Chairman of The Council of Fashion Designers in America (CDFA) Tom Ford is planning on shortening New York Fashion Week.

Instead of the regular seven day format, NYFW will now last five days.

While it will indefinitely be a positive change for New York fashion buyers and editors, many fashion brands will be negatively impacted by this business decision.

This particular negative impact happens to be that many of the smaller fashion brands will not make it onto the runway, with the CDFA favouring larger, more profitable brands instead.

More larger shows will also have to be crammed into one day, meaning many struggles with booking top models and renowned venues.

Ford is also attempting to make NYFW international, stating “Coming back from Europe, what’s stunning to me was the isolation I feel here. I feel that America is one of the most isolated countries in the world. We’re very inward looking. What American fashion needs to become in order to be more relevant in the world is to think of itself as not just American but as international.”

Ford is hoping that targeting international fashion elite will help bring typically American brands to global catwalks.

Vintage Glam. We all want it, but how do we get it?

Vintage style icons have been splattered all around vintage magazines and countless thrift stores.

The two most notable; Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn of course.

Here are some high-quality timeless style tips that will age like a fine wine.

Do: Have a style icon. Have an iconic film star or two to model your style from. Stuck for ideas? Flick through a vintage magazine or newspaper and find someone who catches your eye.

Don’t: Wear a costume. Don’t purchase a tacky costume from Party City, or buy something resembling a costume, unless you are attending a costume party, or even worse, wearing your newfound style as a costume.

Do: Research. Research vintage patterns, binge-watch old films, make Pinterest boards on the topic, do as much research as you can.

Don’t: Go to cheap, mainstream stores. Unless it is a thrift store, try to avoid stereotypical mainstream stores if you really want to hone this particular style. Attempt to find trendy vintage boutiques and preppy stores instead.

Do: Find tidbits here and there. For example, wear a pearl necklace à la Audrey Hepburn, or wear a flouncy skirt just like Marilyn Monroe. Don’t overdo it though, as mentioned before, no one wants a copycat.

Don’t: Fully discard your old style, unless, that’s what you want to do, of course. Try to mix vintage style with your current style for a true you flair.

Do: Find what works for you. Fall in love with what pieces and styles you truly like.

Because, that, my friends, is truly timeless.

Victoria’s Secret. We all know it as the glam lingerie and beauty company that has exclusive fashion shows every year.

But what if we look deeper, beyond the surface even?

Because Victoria’s Secret has been spamming people with their endless campaigns for decades now. Billboard after billboard, advertisement after advertisement; no matter where you look, Victoria’s Secret is always watching.

And that’s not the only issue. Because of these countless advertisements, many women, old and young alike, have been insecure in their bodies. They constantly think that if their bodies and faces do not fulfill the so-called “fantasy” they will never be beautiful or well-liked.

And that’s not true at all.

Luckily brands such as Aerie and Dove have been stepping in to provide numerous body positivity campaigns worldwide.

Such as this campaign and many more. Am I the only one who sees the major difference?

Because of these comparisons and many more, Victoria’s Secret has received endless backlash, with hashtags such as #CancelVictoriasSecret constantly appearing all over Instagram.

Victoria’s Secret even had to cancel this years acclaimed “Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show” because of the numerous hate and backlash.

Victoria’s Secret; Spam or Scam?
